Attitude is a factor in language learning that leads to cross cultural understanding. Helen Wilkes believes that the totality of language learning is comprised of three integrated components: linguistic, cultural, and attitudinal. As foreign language teachers, we all teach the basic sounds, vocabulary, and syntax of the target language. Above we have seen methods of introducing culture into the classroom. The remainder of this paper will focus on effecting attitudinal changes. Most foreign language teachers would agree that positively sensitizing students to cultural phenomena is urgent and crucial. Studies indicate that attitudinal factors are clear predictors of success in second language learning.
According to Hanvey (1979:53) there are four levels of cross-cultural awareness. Level 1 is awareness of superficial cultural traits often interpreted as exotic of bizarre. Levels2 is awareness of significant and subtle cultural traits that contrast markedly with one’s own and are interpreted as unbelievable and irrational. Level 3 is similar to Level 2, but the cultural traits are recognized as believable through intellectual analysis. Level 4 is awareness of how another culture feels from the standpoint of the insider. This is termed empathy by some and transspection by others. The choice of the term itself betrays a difference in standpoint.
